Mentoring
Why We Have Mentors
Making the transition from the chaos of homelessness to the structure of a healthy lifestyle is a difficult transition. Whether a resident is coming from prostitution, financial hardships, drug abuse, or any other place, they are in need of much support and love.
When asked what the greatest commandment was, Christ said, “Love the Lord your God…and…Love your neighbor as yourself.”* At the MMCF Christian Home for Women, we desire to show this love by serving as Christ’s hands and feet in the homeless community.
Developing loving relationships with those who have been neglected by the world can be one of the most fruitful ways that Christ is revealed in us. As we travel on this journey of service, we want to offer other Christian women the chance to participate, by coming into direct contact with residents as Mentors in our Mentoring Program.
Mentor Responsibilities
Spiritually, the Mentoring Program requires a willing and prayerful heart. You may be faced with many difficult and emotionally straining situations while mentoring. This makes constant prayer and reliance on Christ a must-have. Every time you interact with a resident, you are being given a chance to speak truth and love into their heart. Only the Lord can change hearts, but as each broken resident attempts to reshape their self image and lifestyle, it might be your words that He will use to carry out this miracle of change.
Practically, the Mentoring Program only requires one hour per week. However, it can be as extensive as you and your resident would like. Your main responsibility during this hour+ is to aid your resident in completing her weekly program goals. Some weeks this may entail helping her understand legal forms, like how to apply for school, jobs, or state aid. Other weeks, it may mean merely spending time with her and helping her process the emotions or thoughts she is struggling with at the time. Each mentoring experience is different, but every pair of women is always given a unique chance to experience God and His love in a new way.
